Take me up in your hot air balloon, and feed me cotton candy... And a Robot.
Not much for recipes today, I was much too busy with random family things to do much in the way of baking or cooking.

I've been trying really hard not to have any extra candy or goodies in the house, mostly sending the stuff I make for this blog away, and not really buying much in the way of candy or anything else. Sure, sometimes my sweet tooth gets the better of me, and days like today, I give it a little treat, just to keep it from really making its presence known when more overly sugary and sweet treats are within reach.

So while I was cleaning my kitchen, going through my gadgets and appliances, picking out what I want to keep, which I want to store, and which I want to get rid of, I realized I had this big old cotton candy machine just hanging out on top of the fridge. Part of me wanted to just put it in the get rid of box, but another part of me said I should keep it, because you never know when you'll want a cotton candy machine handy.

Then my sweet tooth chimed in, and I ended up making a batch of cotton candy.  Luckily, as the robot in the photos is attempting to explain, it only took one tablespoon of sugar to make the two giant handfuls of cotton candy pictured. One tablespoon of sugar = 45 calories. Not bad when you think that two Hershey's kisses are 50 calories.

Anyways, I happily snacked on my cotton candy while taking a break from household stuff... but I waited until after I had a little photo shoot with the green robot here...  Hey, I'll take any excuse to post robot photos!

What's that off in the distance?

AAAaaacK! ITS COTTON CANDY!

well, its fluffy....

And.. It is soft...

And you made all that cotton candy with only this much sugar???

See ya later sugar, I've got a date with a big fluffy ball of cotton candy...

I only wish I could store this stuff without it crystallizing. It would make tea parties so much more fun.
"One puff or two?"
-A.

P.S. This robot needs a name.

I tried to make a poll, but it isn't working for anyone, so.. Just leave your name suggestions as a comment if you'd like to chime in! *smile*

Is it possible to make cotton candy without a cotton candy-maker??

Charlie.

Yeah, actually you can make spun sugar, which is a little crunchier and less fluffy than cotton candy, but after a little practice, you can get it fairly close.

Basically you boil sugar to hard crack stage, and using a specialty tool that looks like a whisk without the rounded end (a bunch of metal sticks attached to a handle) you dip the tool into the slightly cooled sugar, and waive it over a stick, so that the sugar forms strings in the air while it cools, and it gathers over the stick.

Its really messy, and there is actually a lot more to it than that description. I've made it before in my mom's kitchen, but my kitchen is not nearly large enough to do it.

Oh, I see! Thank you!

You could name the green one something like Rosemary, Olive or one of your favourite herbs. And then the white one could be something like ginger, or garlic, or even vanilla, etc. I don't remember whether you have other colours, but if you had a red one it could even be cinnamon or cayenne or something. Same for the other colours! Keeps in theme with your LJ/Blog :D

I've actually got a white one, two green ones, an orange one and a purple one. I think I'll take their photos and post a real poll with name options. Another person recommended Basil as the green robot's name, and I think thats a fairly decent herb to name him after... So that option is definately going in the final selection. Thank you!

That cotton candy looks lovely.

Hmm... since Rodney the robot sounds so swell, he could be Randall. Then they could do robot buddy things like hanging out with the ninjas or hijacking delicious cupcakes. :)

If it's a he, I think Randall is good.

For a her, how about Ramona?

What kind of cotton candy machine do you have?
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on August 12th, 2007 06:59 pm (UTC)
This one-
http://www.amazon.com/Nostalgia-Electrics-CCM505-Cotton-Candy/dp/B0000AR7OR/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4337994-6531336?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1186944926&sr=8-1

Its a pretty cool machine, and I got it on sale for really cheap back when they were available in stores around here, and they weren't selling very well. The only bad things about it are that because its a pretty high powered spinning motor inside a fairly basic plastic shell, the vibrations get pretty loud unless you put the machine on top of a dishtowel or something soft, and when the sugar strands start spitting out, you've got to be really on top of it or they'll just stick to the sides of the white ring around it.

Otherwise, its really awesome, and fun for parties and stuff.. I mean, who doesn't love cotton candy?

Kym[info]kymster on August 14th, 2007 04:52 am (UTC)
His name should be Appleton. He's the same color as a green apple.
modestyblaize[info]modestyblaize on August 22nd, 2007 02:50 am (UTC)
Did the robot get a name yet?
I am still rooting for Basil, though I should have added that it should be pronounced Bah-zil...
