File this one under "Strangest things I've ever made"
I'm just going to apologize in advance for this one.

I'm sorry.
You see, its April fool's day today, and I wanted so badly to play a prank on you guys. But I'm not very good at that.

Instead, here are some food related April fool's pranks you can play on other people-

My husband and I made these this morning. We figured if we made them up early enough, someone might have enough time to make them for their own family for dinner tonight.

Vegans, Vegetarians, be warned. Meat is involved in this.
However, it doesn't really LOOK like meat. At least, its not supposed to look like meat.

We got the idea's for this April fool's dinner from The Family Fun website. They have an entire page about different "April fools foods", so we took a few of the ideas and decided to test them and see how well they worked, 'cause you know when you see a photo online, sometimes you can just tell that it's "styled food" and not REAL food? That's sort of how I felt about the photos supplied on the website. So.. here goes!

First up- Mashed potatoes and meat-cakes.

We replaced the cake with meatloaf, pressed into the cupcake papers, and iced it with purple mashed potatoes. The sprinkles are Himalayan pink salt.

After that, we made a Chicken "Not" pie-

This one was my favourite. It actually LOOKED just like a chicken pot pie, but SURPRISE! There's no chicken in it, and it's not a savoury dish at all!

I can't tell you how either of these tasted. I don't eat ground beef, and the thought of meatloaf cupcakes makes me want to throw up. That's why Aaron actually did the mixing of the meatloaf, and the pressing into the cupcake papers, and the baking of them. I just made the mashed potatoes and did the piping.

The not-pie I made, but I couldn't bring myself to try it, because it really did look real to me. It's made with a banana that I mashed up and mixed with some vanilla pudding, then I took an orange starburst, cut it into pieces and shaped them like little diced pieces of carrot. Then I did the same thing with the yellow starburst, cutting and shaping them like little pieces of corn. The peas were the most difficult, because I had to roll little pieces of fruit roll up into balls and use them as peas. The top is a genuine piece of pie crust that I poked full of holes and brushed an egg wash onto, just like a regular pot pie.

Aaron says it tasted like starburst pie, so I'm guessing that it's very sugary. He said he would have thought it was awesome as a kid, so I'm thinking this would be great to use as a prank on a little kid, which makes sense because we got the idea from a kid's website.

In the background of these photos, you can see our third project. The toasted cheese sandwich.

This one was not something I would consider a success. Not only could we not find a premade pound cake that looked like bread, when we found one that would look ok, we couldn't get it to toast in a toaster oven, OR in the oven. It just burned. I'm thinking all the sugar in it made the toasting impossible. So, we cut it into regular pieces and smeared some frosting on it, coloured orange to look like melted cheese.

It tasted gross. I should have taken the time and baked my own pound cake. Sara Lee- I hate you, and your disgusting pound cake. After one bite, we decided to chuck the whole loaf.

So there you have it. April fools foods, and a few photos of how they actually end up.

Have a great day!

-A.

That's awesome! Though I'd be tempted to use sweetened pastry dough for the pie. I also suspect that the smell would give away the meaty cupcakes. I am now encourage to try purple mashed potatoes though. They look so pretty.
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 08:30 pm (UTC)
Yeah, its probably a good idea, the sweetened pastry dough. It would probably taste much better. I thought the smell would give it away too, but my husband said if you served them together, a person would probably assume the smell was coming from the "not" pie, since they would be assuming that there would be meat and gravy in it, instead of the meatcake.

The other thing is, the meat cake is totally given away by the paper being soaked in meat-juices. I'd definately use metallic papers for this one.

Purple mashed potatoes are really good! I make them just like regular potatoes, adding sour cream, butter and a little bit of milk. They're tasty. I ate the rest of the contents of the pastry bag when I was done piping them onto the meatcakes. hehe.. mmm.. potatoes. I could live off of them.

I think diced mangos or papaya could also stand in for carrots, and taste a little better. Peas are hard, though. Perhaps chunks of kiwi or small green grapes. Banana creme with mango and kiwi with sweet pasty dough sounds potentially yummy.

First off, I absolutely adore your photos. Too cute.

Second, to toast pound cake you actually need to roast it. Bob Blumer (The Surreal Gourmet) does a 'french fries for dessert' thing. Cut a pound cake into finger-length/thickness pieces, spray lightly with a non-flavoured oil, and roast in a hot oven until crispy on the outside. Serve in french fry containers you've begged from your local, and a ketchup squeeze bottle full of raspberry coulis. I suppose you could also use vanilla pudding, to simulate mayonnaise.

Totally off topic. :/
This is perhaps an odd question, but do you by chance frequent Metafilter? Your name looks familiar.

Oh, I meant to reply earlier, but: neat! I see you all the time there! In fact, I'm not stalking you at all, but I was reading a MeTa callout and there you were.

Thank you!

I didn't even think about spraying them with oil first. hehe..

I LOVE that french fries for dessert idea! I'm totally going to have to make that just because. Maybe for my little sisters, they'd love it too.

You're welcome!

Bob also did a Green Eggs and Ham thing involving honeydew melon & prosciutto crudo.

Ha ha! They're superb. :D That banana really does look like chicken.
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 10:18 pm (UTC)
It was weird. I think it'd be fun to offer it to someone who had no idea what it really was, but as for making it and then actually trying it.. no thank you. hehehe..

Sahibjaan[info]endermunkee on April 1st, 2007 09:35 pm (UTC)
The very idea of a Starburst-flavored pie is making me gag, though curiously, your durian post only made me . . . curious.

I second your "potatoes. I could live off them."
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 10:19 pm (UTC)
Mmm.. potatoes. My maiden name means "potato" in Gaelic. My highschool's mascot was "the spudder" and was a giant potato with a crown on top of it. I love potatoes. hehe..

Oh, potatoes. :)

my mother and i love april fools' food! when i was little we made a whole meal, "burgers" (peppermint patty meat, coconut in green food coloring for lettuce, yellow and red icing for mustard and ketchup, and cookie buns), icing mashed potatoes, and put jello in glasses with straws in them so it looked like fruit punch but you couldn't drink it- and there are peas and carrots candies, but i admire your cutting-up-starburst efforts! we were just lazy about our fake veggies.
it was all WAY too much sugar to actually enjoy, but fun to do. happy april fools' day!
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 10:21 pm (UTC)
Those burgers sound cute! I was going to make mashed potato "ice cream" but I forgot to pick up ice cream cones while I was at the store, and then I was too lazy to go back once I got home. hehe..

I looked EVERYWHERE for those pea and carrot candies! I remember them when I was a kid, but I can't seem to find them at any of the local bulk candy shops. It was sad.

I totally agree with you on the whole meatloaf cupcakes. The thought of it makes me want to puke. I adore the purple mashed potato "icing" though. Too cute.
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 10:23 pm (UTC)
I thought about making mashed potato ice cream, but I forgot to pick up ice cream cones and I was too lazy to go back to the store to get them, once I got home and realized I forgot them.

My husband is bringing the leftover meatcakes to work tomorrow to mess with his co-workers. hehehe.. I'm just glad someone likes them! *gag*
Anna[info]candiedbullet on April 1st, 2007 10:18 pm (UTC)
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....starbursts. omfg. sounds delish right now.

hehe.
I'm not creative at all for April Fool's Day and I never try anything. =D
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 1st, 2007 10:26 pm (UTC)
My mom used to do all sorts of stuff to me and my family when I was a kid. She went ALL OUT. One of my favourites was when she would cut the end off of toothpaste tubes, clean them out and then fill them with frosting. She got my sister and I several times witht hat one, but we never figured out how she did it, she had to explain it to us years later.

I'm usually too lazy to do anything to anyone, and I'm really NOT good at keeping a straight face. But I had a lot of fun making these today.

I'd say the grilled cheese one was not very convincing--I could tell it was pound cake before I read the description! XD

I think these are all pretty good though, because they're not like barfcakes or something. :) friendly jokes?
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on April 2nd, 2007 01:39 am (UTC)
Thats what I was talking about, how it didn't look right. I post about failures as well as successes, just incase someone else wants to give it a try.

I would recommend making your own pound cake, or even just a regular white cake in a loaf pan, if you wanted to give that a try. I didnt have time to make my own, and I was using the brand that was recommended by the article that I got the instructions from.

The rest were fun though, and They're totally friendly jokes. I dont like mean spirited ones.

a food prank story
So my husband once went out with a bunch of college friends to a Japanese restaurant. One fellow was something of a braggart in terms of how much wasabi (green Japanese horseradish) paste he could manfully enjoy, and proceeded to become drunker and more jovially obnoxious as the evening wore on. One of the fellows pulled the waitress aside as she was about to serve dessert to the table, green tea ice cream...and asked her to serve up an ice cream scoop of *wasabi* to Mr. I-Can-Hold-My-Wasabi in a little ice cream dish...(note to those who've never had it: wasabi is something eaten in quantities of a spice/garnish, not a main dish!)

The group was very compassionate...they had available a pitcher of ice cold water next to him. Mr. High-Spice-Tolerance was a bit quieter after that!

That meatloaf cupcake is amusing! Half my family (there are 8 of us) are vegetarians, half not(my brothers), so for the boys, that trick would actually work. :D

Cute idea. We like meatloaf, but the idea of meatlof in cupcake form is kinda meh. They look like real cupcakes. I wonder if you could have tried the purple potatoes and not had to dye them.

BUT IT'S SO MUCH FUN! hehehe.. I had more fun playing with it than I think I would have had eating it! It's not every day that you get to shape peas out of fruit roll ups! hahaha.

Pretty clever, A!
Another for next year, perhaps; "sushi" made with rice crispy treats for the rice, and fruit for the veggies/fish in the middle. I'm sure you've seen that idea around, and sometimes it comes out pretty tricky!

I find ground meat a bit revolting too, but I have a similar recipe for cupcakey-looking things that could be prettied up like this. It uses sausage meat (though could probably be adapted for vegetarian tastes) as the base and is very nice.

My little brother calls them sausage cupcakes.

Hi! sorry to be intrusive, but I run a gallery of meatloaf cakes, and was pointed to this entry.

I would REALLY love to have yours in there, because these are UTTERLY ADORABLE. And you take wicked good pictures.

The gallery is at http://www.blackwidowbakery.com/gallery
Adventures in culinary creativity.[info]a_muffin_story on June 7th, 2007 01:43 am (UTC)
hey, no problem!

Go right ahead and use any photo you'd like! Thats awesome. My husband is checking out your gallery, and is mesmerized. He's a big fan of the meatcakes. I'll be making some more meatloaf cupcakes in a little while, my husband's co-workers have been bugging him to bring some more in. I can send you photos of those too, if you'd like.
b4k3r Grrrl: meatcake[info]tragerstreit on June 7th, 2007 03:15 am (UTC)
Yay! There will be a lot more for him to look at shortly; there's a major addition to the gallery underway. Including yours, now! :D I'll post the link when it's up.

And yes, please, send photos of more meatcakes! :D I love to see what people are doing with the idea.
