I'm just going to apologize in advance for this one.
I'm sorry.
You see, its April fool's day today, and I wanted so badly to play a prank on you guys. But I'm not very good at that.
Instead, here are some food related April fool's pranks you can play on other people-
My husband and I made these this morning. We figured if we made them up early enough, someone might have enough time to make them for their own family for dinner tonight.
Vegans, Vegetarians, be warned. Meat is involved in this. However, it doesn't really LOOK like meat. At least, its not supposed to look like meat.
We got the idea's for this April fool's dinner from The Family Fun website. They have an entire page about different "April fools foods", so we took a few of the ideas and decided to test them and see how well they worked, 'cause you know when you see a photo online, sometimes you can just tell that it's "styled food" and not REAL food? That's sort of how I felt about the photos supplied on the website. So.. here goes!
First up- Mashed potatoes and meat-cakes.
We replaced the cake with meatloaf, pressed into the cupcake papers, and iced it with purple mashed potatoes. The sprinkles are Himalayan pink salt.

After that, we made a Chicken "Not" pie-
This one was my favourite. It actually LOOKED just like a chicken pot pie, but SURPRISE! There's no chicken in it, and it's not a savoury dish at all!

I can't tell you how either of these tasted. I don't eat ground beef, and the thought of meatloaf cupcakes makes me want to throw up. That's why Aaron actually did the mixing of the meatloaf, and the pressing into the cupcake papers, and the baking of them. I just made the mashed potatoes and did the piping.
The not-pie I made, but I couldn't bring myself to try it, because it really did look real to me. It's made with a banana that I mashed up and mixed with some vanilla pudding, then I took an orange starburst, cut it into pieces and shaped them like little diced pieces of carrot. Then I did the same thing with the yellow starburst, cutting and shaping them like little pieces of corn. The peas were the most difficult, because I had to roll little pieces of fruit roll up into balls and use them as peas. The top is a genuine piece of pie crust that I poked full of holes and brushed an egg wash onto, just like a regular pot pie.
Aaron says it tasted like starburst pie, so I'm guessing that it's very sugary. He said he would have thought it was awesome as a kid, so I'm thinking this would be great to use as a prank on a little kid, which makes sense because we got the idea from a kid's website.
In the background of these photos, you can see our third project. The toasted cheese sandwich.

This one was not something I would consider a success. Not only could we not find a premade pound cake that looked like bread, when we found one that would look ok, we couldn't get it to toast in a toaster oven, OR in the oven. It just burned. I'm thinking all the sugar in it made the toasting impossible. So, we cut it into regular pieces and smeared some frosting on it, coloured orange to look like melted cheese.
It tasted gross. I should have taken the time and baked my own pound cake. Sara Lee- I hate you, and your disgusting pound cake. After one bite, we decided to chuck the whole loaf.
So there you have it. April fools foods, and a few photos of how they actually end up.
Have a great day!
